Atmel.comThe Challenge
As a world leader in microcontroller and touch solutions, Atmel is renowned for its engineering breakthroughs. Its innovative products literally transform how people interact with technology. In 2010, the company set out to transform how people interact with its website, which had grown increasingly complex with time. The site comprised 40,000 web pages, offering customers access to an online catalog of more than 1,400 products and a prodigious number of downloadable technical documents including data sheets, schematics, release notes, user guides and more. As a result, finding specific information or locating a particular product or document could be daunting.
Atmel had two clear objectives for its website’s future: to make every user experience as simple and elegant as possible, and to strengthen its brand online. The company brought Clock Four on board to talk strategy and to help engineer its online transformation.
The Solution
Clock Four conducted a detailed competitive analysis, a usability audit, and interviews with Atmel’s customers, external partners and internal stakeholders. Atmel and Clock Four then collaborated on sharpening the company’s brand principles and applying them to the new site. Next, Clock Four completed the site’s visual design, updated the information architecture, reorganized thousands of pages of content for migration to a new, more powerful content management system, and created fresh HTML and JavaScript templates.
Atmel's new site was launched in 2011 with a feature worthy of the company's reputation as an innovator the Atmel product finder, a uniquely interactive tool that enables users to carry out targeted searches for specific products, documents and tools. Users can control dozens of filters, narrowing or expanding search results at the click of a mouse. Because the primary goal of many Atmel customers is to identify and "spec" products that will be critical components of their systems, the product finder tool is omnipresent and conveniently accessible from every page of the site.
